BLURB

Life and a dismal last name are the only two things Beyah’s parents ever gave her. After carving her path all on her own, Beyah is well on her way to bigger and better things, thanks to no one but herself. With only two short months separating her from the future she’s built and the past she desperately wants to leave behind, an unexpected death leaves Beyah with no place to go during the interim.
Forced to reach out to her last resort, Beyah has to spend the remainder of her summer on a peninsula in Texas with a father she barely knows. Beyah’s plan is to keep her head down and let the summer slip by seamlessly, but her new neighbor Samson throws a wrench in that plan.

Samson and Beyah have nothing in common on the surface.
She comes from a life of poverty and neglect; he comes from a family of wealth and privilege. But one thing they do have in common is that they’re both drawn to sad things. Which means they’re drawn to each other.

Beyah and Samson agree to stay in the shallow end of a summer fling. What Beyah doesn’t realize is that a rip current is coming, and it’s about to drag her heart out to sea.

★★★★★

I didn’t get to it this summer but instead, I made it my first read for 2021! It was the perfect way to kick off the year.

I loved the mystery around Samson. A rich boy who doesn’t have much to say and doesn’t let anyone get too close to him. Until Beyah slowly chips away at his walls.

And then there’s Beyah who feels vulnerable as she goes through life.

Beyah is a 19-year-old who grew up with an addict mom. Early on she learned to fend for herself. Her father had a one-night stand with Beyah’s mom so he really didn’t know much about her. When Beyah was young he made an effort to see her but as she grew older they grew apart. He was a money source for her mom.

When Beyah reaches out to him about staying with him for the summer before college start he is more than happy to reconnect with her. Beyah discovers a life she’s never known. One filled with a support system of a family that includes a step-mom, step-sister, and a dog.

Heart Bones gives the reader a new perspective on everything from a person’s weight to what it means to have or not have money to does a persons intentions matter if the thing they do is seen as illegal in the eyes of the law. I love how Colleen Hoover presents these perspectives and flips the script on what society thinks about these things.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!
