Review: When He Was Wicked by Julie Quinn

WHEN HE WAS WICKED

(Bridgerton, #6)

Julia Quinn

BLURB

In every life there is a turning point . . .

A moment so tremendous, so sharp and breathtaking, that one knows one’s life will never be the same. For Michael Stirling, London’s most infamous rake, that moment came the first time he laid eyes on Francesca Bridgerton.

After a lifetime of chasing women, of smiling slyly as they chased him, of allowing himself to be caught but never permitting his heart to become engaged, he took one look at Francesca Bridgerton and fell so fast and hard into love it was a wonder he managed to remain standing. Unfortunately for Michael, however, Francesca’s surname was to remain Bridgerton for only a mere thirty-six hours longer—the occasion of their meeting was, lamentably, a supper celebrating her imminent wedding to his cousin.

But that was then . . . Now Michael is the earl and Francesca is free, but still she thinks of him as nothing other than her dear friend and confidant. Michael dares not speak to her of his love . . . until one dangerous night, when she steps innocently into his arms and passion proves stronger than even the most wicked of secrets . . .

SLOW BURN

Francesca & Michael’s love story is one that takes a while to develop. When we first meet Francesca she is married to Michael’s cousin. Due to an unforeseen incident, her husband has passed away. Secretly, over the years Michael has been attracted to Francesca, and now that his cousin wasn’t in the picture Michael wrestles with the guilty on if it is okay to pursue her.

What is happening begins to feel like a somewhat forbidden love since if Michael’s cousin hadn’t died there would be no acting on their feelings.

For me, this one was a little too slow. I didn’t love it as much as the other books in the series. But that was bound to happen at some point. Just as we can love a record album but not every song on it is our favorite. The same is true for a book series. A reader can love a series but not every book in the series has to be their favorite.

When He Was Wicked is the 6th book in the Bridgertons series. Francesca is the married Bridgerton sister whose husband has passed away. Her, longtime friend, Michael will eventually pursue her after years of loving her from a distance. There are 8 Bridgerton siblings; each one will get their own book to tell their love story. Lovers of historical romances and slow burns will find this one up their alley. Two more books to go in the series. To find out about the upcoming Netflix series and release dates go here.

Below are the 6th books I’ve read, so far.
