Beauty and the Mustache
Knitting in the City
Penny Reid

beauty and mustache coverThere are three things you need to know about Ashley:
1) She has six brothers and they all have beards,
2) She is a reader, and
3) She knows how to knit.

When I read that Ash had six brothers, my mouth dropped opened. As an only child, I dreamed of having just one brother but the thought of six seems overwhelming. Growing up with six brothers was taxing on Ash. Needing a clean break from her childhood Ashley left home right after high school. Eight years later, unexpected news about a love one sends Ashley racing home to be with her family.

There are three things you need to know about Drew:
1) He has a beard,
2) He is a reader, and
3) He knows how to bake a pie.

Drew is the boss and friend of one of Ash’s brothers. He’s ruggedly sexy with a quiet demeanor. His attraction to Ashley almost goes unnoticed because he has an undemanding, quiet nature about him. Not wanting to push her into anything she isn’t ready for he is there for her when she needs the pieces picked up.

INTERVIEW

✻ How did you come up with the title?

(Ms. Reid) –
The title is based on the most basic premise of the story: a beauty (Ashley) must contend with mustaches (her brothers, Drew, and Nietzsche philosophy) as well as other figurative and literal beasts over the course of the book.

✻ Is there a message in your book that you want readers to grasp?

(Ms. Reid) –
There are several!

First: Always, always, always have a life-sized cutout of Charlie Hunnam waiting for your friend when she returns from a long trip.

Second: Too many roosters under one roof will lead to an inadvertent display of cockiness.

Third: Embrace your gifts as your own, even if they’re because of or linked to painful memories.

Fourth: Look for, listen to, and accept wisdom regardless of the messenger.

Fifth: Make time for the people who love you

✻ Which writer would you consider a mentor?

(Ms. Reid)  –
April White (author of the Immortal Descendants) because she is my mentor. She is patient and pushy and the best story teller I’ve ever met.

✻ What book are you reading now?

(Ms. Reid)  –
I’m reading the second book in Heidi Hutchinson’s Double Blind Study (clean rock star romance) series, In Your Honor

Thank you

SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).

By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.
