Review ~ PLASTIC HEARTS by Lisa De Jong

PLASTIC HEARTS

(Hearts, #1)

Lisa De Jong

BLURB

My life has always been safe. I like it that way. I grew up in a fake society where plastic hearts rule. If our hearts are made of plastic, they can never be broken. My parents have expectations and I do everything I can to meet them, even if it means giving up on my own dreams.

Now, all I want is to be free to make my own choices.

Dane Wright is everything I have been warned to stay away from. We met one night while I was with my perfect, parent-approved boyfriend and I haven’t stopped thinking about him. I don’t want to like him. I am doing everything I can to ignore his pull, but my heart seems to want what it cannot have, what it has never had.

Can he measure up? He may think I am too good for him, but maybe he is too good for me.

Life is a series of choices and I have never been able to make my own. Until one day, when my heart decides to make a choice for me.

Recommended for mature readers due to sexual content and language.

4 Stars!

Plastic Hearts are made so they cannot be broken. Cracked maybe, but never broken.

I honestly had so much fun reading this book! It was a largely character-driven story and the author did an incredible job bringing these fictional beings to life. The flirtatious dialogue and adorable banter made me giddy and allowed me to sink completely into the story until I was entirely swallowed up by it.

Alexandra Riley and Dane Wright stem from opposite ends of the social and economic spectrum. Alex lives her life robotically to please her over-bearing, rich parents, while Dane uses his broken and unfortunate childhood as motivation to live freely in the moment. Dane is not only someone of whom Alex’s parents would disapprove, but also poses the ultimate threat of shattering Alex’s perfectly ‘plastic’ barricades…

Dane was the most exciting and scariest thing to ever enter my plastic world.

Dane’s persistence and determination to Alex’s initial stubborn brush-offs was adorable and oh-so-sexy! Alex was both repulsed and turned-on by Dane’s overt cockiness—and I must say that I loved the chase, as well. The build-up and lack of insta-love was refreshing.

Do you ever leave your arrogance at home or does it follow you wherever you go?

The pacing of this story was perfection; nothing was rushed or felt forced, but it also wasn’t too slow where I became bored. Alex’s character was believable and relatable. Although she was a virgin, she didn’t have that naive innocence that many heroines possess. Dane was truly book-boyfriend material—sexy, sweet, with delicious alpha-undertones! I loved his confidence and the fact that he was determined to make a life for himself.

I truly enjoyed the theme of self-discovery and the courage to follow your heart despite the consequences. Alex and Dane had an inspiring connection that, many times, had me melting with its intensity. Although their journey isn’t over, this story kindly does NOT leave off on a cliffhanger. Excellent read!

When you let your heart carry you through life, you’re never alone.
